Specific funding for a Fall recruit class was not included in the 2006 Operating Budget. This resolution does not provide funding for the recruit class, which is estimated to cost $193,190. Fire Department staff will review expenditure and revenue levels to determine whether an appropriation from the Contingent Reserve will be requested later this year.

Body
The 2006 Fire operating budget did not include authorization for a fall recruit class. The Department has received notification that 10 employees plan to retire in 2007.
The Department must fill these positions to maintain the daily staffing level of 68 firefighters on duty. Approval is requested for a recruit class of 10 firefighters to start on October 2, 2006. The class cost is $193,190.
The Department is reviewing its operating budget and projecting funding needed for the remainder of 2006. Any funds needed for the recruit class and other expenses will be requested later this year.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Common Council approves a fall recruit class of 10 firefighters to start on October 2, 2006; and
BE IT STILL FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Department will request an appropriation of necessary funding for the class and other expenses later this year.
