Congratulating Housing Initiatives, Inc. for winning a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development “Door Knocker Award” for the Robert L. Beilman House.
Body
WHEREAS, Housing Initiatives, Inc. was founded in 1993 to provide housing for homeless persons with severe mental illness; and
WHEREAS, Housing Initiatives currently owns and operates 75 housing units in Madison, housing nearly 200 persons; and
WHEREAS, Housing Initiatives has received over $2.6 million in funding from the U.S. Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) HOME program, a block grant program that allocates about $2 billion a year nationwide to projects that create affordable housing for low-income households; and
WHEREAS, 2011 is the 20th anniversary of the HOME program, and to commemorate the event, HUD solicited nominations from partner state and local governments for exceptional projects to receive one of four “Door Knocker Awards”; and
WHEREAS, the City of Madison Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Department submitted a nomination for Housing Initiatives, Inc.’s Robert L. Beilman House, a project on Ruskin Street on Madison’s Northside that combines Housing Initiatives’ office with nine one-bedroom apartment units for its clients; and
WHEREAS, in the submission to HUD, Housing Initiatives and CDBG staff highlighted many of the project’s benefits, such as fulfilling several objectives and policies for housing needs detailed in the City of Madison Comprehensive Plan, affordability, adaptive features designed for Housing Initiatives’ clients and design and energy efficiency features; and
WHEREAS, HUD announced on May 2, 2011, at its 20th Anniversary Conference in Bethesda, Maryland that the Robert L. Beilman House had been chosen to receive one of the four awards;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council congratulate Housing Initiatives, Inc. for winning a U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development...
