Title
Authorizing the Fire Department to coordinate the Safety Town Program which will be funded thorough donations and registration fees and amending the program budget.
Body
The Fire Department founded the Safety Town Program in the summer of 2004 to educate pre-kindergarten children on safety and injury prevention. The program lasts for two and one-half weeks in the summer and each weekday session is two and one-half hours. The program contributors are the Fire Department, Police Department, Health Department, Safe Kids Coalition of Dane County, Madison Gas & Electric, local meteorologist, Dean Health, University Police Department and other presentations.

The Department works with community organizations on this program and has had a different coordinator in the past.  The Department needs to again take the lead on this program to improve both the direction and focus of the program.

This program has been funded by donations and registration fees. The Department intends to continue these funding sources.  The number of children for which the City will  receive registration fees is approximately 134 annually. The plan is to have ten additional children attend under a scholarship program.
