Board of Park Commissioners Honoring the 70th Anniversary of the Women’s Municipal Golf Association in the Madison Area.

 

Body

WHEREAS, the Women’s Municipal Golf Association “WMGA” began in 1953 with the goal of enriching its members’ golf experiences while learning and enjoying the life-time game of golf; and,

 

WHEREAS, WMGA was formed at a time when there were few options for women to participate in golf leagues, with exception of those that were members of private country clubs who could play with their husbands; and,

 

WHEREAS, over the last 70 years, WMGA has continued to host weekly 9 and 18-hole leagues for women golfers on City of Madison golf courses, providing women regular access and opportunities to play on public courses; and,

 

WHEREAS, 1977, WMGA and Madison Parks showcased Yahara Hills Golf Course and made history by co-hosting the first United States Golf Association National Public Links Tournament, which was the first ever tournament for women public links golfers; and,

 

WHEREAS in 1995, WMGA was recognized by the City of Madison Board of Park Commissioners with a Certificate of Appreciation for “Enhancing the quality of Parks in Madison Today and for Future Generations”; and,

 

WHERAS, WMGA continues to promote the game of golf among women and recognizes the role that golf can play in maintaining physical, mental, emotional and social well-being; and,

 

WHEREAS, WMGA continues to help the Madison Golf Program work towards its goal of promoting equity and inclusion at all courses; and,

 

WHEREAS, the 2023 season has concluded with 89 WMGA members playing approximately 1260 rounds of golf at Monona, Odana Hills and Yahara Hills golf courses; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison Board of Park Commissioners recognizes and appreciates that the Women’s Municipal Golf Association has made a genuine impact on the residents of Madison and Dane County, as well as the Madison Parks Golf Program; and,

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Board of Park Commissioners congratulates Women’s Municipal Golf on the Celebration of their 70th Anniversary.
