SUBSTITUTE-Naming Maliha Nu'Man (Name TBD) as Madison's next Youth Poet Laureate.
Body
WHEREAS, poetry promotes dialogue and understanding between generations; and
WHEREAS, poetry promotes civic responsibility, civic engagement, empathy, understanding, and mutual connection; and
WHEREAS, on December 13, 2021, the Madison Common Council passed Resolution No. 68286, RES-21-00343, establishing a Youth Poet Laureate Program; and
WHEREAS, on May 13, 2022 the Madison Common Council passed Resolution No. 71285, RES-22-00343 amending the Youth Poet Laureate Resolution so that the Youth Poet Laureate serves a one-year term in alignment with the National Youth Poet Laureate Program; and
WHEREAS, on the Madison Common Council passed Resolution No.72241, RES-22-00491 appointing Madeleine Bohn the City's first Youth Poet Laureate; and
WHEREAS, on April 6, 2023 the Madison Arts Commission issued a call for the Madison Youth Poet Laureate; and
WHEREAS, by the deadline of May 5, 2023 four (number TBD) youth had submitted applications for the position; and
WHEREAS, on May 9, 2023 the Madison Arts Commission met to vet four (number TBD) applications; and
WHEREAS, after careful consideration the Madison Arts Commission recommend Maliha Nu'Man (Name TBD) to serve as the next Madison Youth Poet Laureate and Sai Snigdha Denduluri (Name TBD) as first runner up, and Claire Bunders (Name TBD) second runner up.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison names Maliha Nu'Man (Name TBD) to serve as Madison's next Youth Poet Laureate, with Sai Snigdha Denduluri (Name TBD) first runner up, and Claire Bunders (Name TBD) as second runner up; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Maliha Nu'Man (Name TBD) will be invited to read a poem at the September 5, 2023 Common Council meeting.
BE FINALLY RESOLVED, that Maliha Nu'Man (Name TBD) shall be known as the "Madison Youth Poet Laureate" from July 13, 2023 until July 12, 2024.
