Title

Accepting ownership of the Wisconsin Landscape mosaic mural by mural artist Arnold Zweerts (1918 Bussum, Netherlands-2009 Hood River, Oregon) which will be installed in the Madison Parks Division's Lakeside Offices' boardroom, 330 E. Lakeside Street, Madison, WI 53715, accepting the non-cash donations and authorizing the Planning Division Director to execute a donation agreement with the Kohler Foundation, Inc. (District 13).

Body

WHEREAS, Arnold Zweerts taught figure drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1960s, and in 1975 he moved to Postville, WI where he continued to be an active artist in a variety of media; and

 

WHEREAS,  in 1977 Zweerts created a mosaic mural of a Wisconsin landscape while living in Postville, Wisconsin; and,

 

WHEREAS, Don and Barbara MacCrimmon, residents of Madison and lifelong friends of Zweerts, bought this mosaic when Zweerts and his wife moved to Oregon; and,

 

WHEREAS, in July 2022, the MacCrimmon Family hired Mosaic Historian Lillian Sizemore to help find a permanent public home for their beloved mosaic; and,

 

WHEREAS, on March 31, 2022, Park’s leadership approved the proposed installation design and location of the Zweerts mosaic mural in the entryway of the Parks Division's Office boardroom, which is available for public use; and,

 

WHEREAS, on November 11, 2024, the Kohler Foundation, Inc. agreed to fund the costs of moving and conserving the mosaic; and 

 

WHEREAS, City Engineering has been partnering with Planning and Parks Division staff to prepare the site; and 

 

WHEREAS, Lillian Sizemore has been contracted to conserve the mosaic prior to installation in the Madison Parks Division's Lakeside Offices' boardroom; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City formally accepts the Kohler Foundation, Inc. donation of artwork appraised at $38,000 and $14,000 of conservation, transportation, and installation work, that the Common Council of the City of Madison wishes to accept the gift of the Wisconsin landscape mosaic mural by Arnold Zweerts from Kohler Foundation, Inc to display in the Parks Facility.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Planning Division Director is authorized to execute an art donation agreement with the Kohler Foundation, Inc. accepting the Wisconsin landscape mosaic mural by Arnold Zweerts from the Kohler Foundation, Inc. as a gift to the City of Madison.

 

BE IT STILL FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Park Commissioners approves the installation and location of the mosaic in the Parks Division’s Lakeside Office boardroom.

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that the Common Council of the City of Madison extends gratitude, through the acceptance and placement of this sculpture, to Lillian Sizemore, who brought this opportunity to the City, and to the MacCrimmon Family, and to the Kohler Foundation, Inc. for ensuring this mosaic continues to be accessible for public view and enjoyment.
