Proclaiming Monday, October 9, 2006, as Indigenous Peoples Day.
Body
WHEREAS, the year 2006 marks the sixth annual celebration of Indigenous Peoples Day at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the second annual celebration in the City of Madison, begun in commemoration of five hundred years of survival and renewal of Native cultures in the face of political and cultural repression; and
WHEREAS, the Indigenous Peoples Day Committee, organized and led by the University of Wisconsin-Madison's Wunk Sheek American Indian student group along with community members of local Native people and others, have once again organized the annual celebration with an Indigenous Peoples Day awareness celebration and parade on Monday, October 9; and
WHEREAS, the Indigenous culture flourishing in the Madison area since time immemorial was a sustainable, peaceful culture based on cooperation among neighbors and respect for the land and for all creatures living on it; and
WHEREAS, this Indigenous culture was disrupted and destroyed in Madison, as in almost all parts of this hemisphere, and yet it has survived; and
WHEREAS, the Indigenous Peoples Day awareness celebration has brought greater understanding to the people of Madison regarding Native cultures and the enormous contributions they have made and continue to make to world culture and to the City of Madison;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council does hereby affirm and proclaim that Monday, October 9, 2006, will be Indigenous Peoples Day again this year and does hereby officially sponsor it; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council does hereby offer its thanks and gratitude to Native People of this hemisphere on behalf of all of Madison, in recognition of their care for this land, and in honor of their culture and philosophy, which are needed now more than ever if the planet is to survive; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Madison Common Council urges all Madisonians to attend the Madison Indigenous Peoples Day awareness celebration and parade to be from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at the Library Mall and continuing up State Street to the West Capitol steps.
