Fiscal Note

The proposed resolution authorizes the allocation of $25,000 from the Municipal Art Fund capital program as a match grant award to the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. The Municipal Art Fund capital program currently has remaining budget authority of approximately $205,000. No additional City appropriation is required.

Seeking Common Council approval of a $25,000 Matching Grant award to Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System on behalf of Wisconsin Institute for Discovery’s Science to Street Art as recommended by the Madison Arts Commission.

Body

WHEREAS, the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery (WID) initiated a partnership with the City to merge science and street art into five graffiti-style murals depicting science content to inspire youth interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Art, and Math); and

 

WHEREAS, the goal of “Science to Street Art” is for UW-Madison scientists and local/regional street artists to create science themed educational street art with an emphasis on reaching underserved community members; and

 

WHEREAS, on July 30, 2018 the Madison Common Council approved Resolution No. RES-18-00571, File ID #52325 authorizing the City of Madison to apply for a $25,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support Science to Street Art, to be matched with $25,000 from the City’s Municipal Art Fund; and

 

WHEREAS, the City applied for but did not receive NEA funding for Science to Street Art; and

 

WHEREAS, staff at WID were able to raise funding for the project from private donors and foundations; and

 

WHEREAS, the Madison Arts Commission wishes to support the Science to Street Art project with matching funds from the Municipal Art Fund; and

 

WHEREAS, The Madison Arts Commission has the authority, by ordinance, to recommend arts grants for approval by the Common Council;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Madison Common Council approves $25,000 in a matching grant award as recommended by Madison Arts Commission and authorizes the Planning Division Director, The Finance Director and the City Attorney to execute the agreements on behalf of the City of Madison to effectuate said grant.
