Commending Fire Marshal Edwin J. Ruckriegel on his retirement from the City of Madison after 32 years of service
Body
WHEREAS, Fire Marshal and Emergency Management Coordinator Edwin J. Ruckriegel started his career with the Madison Fire Department on July 16, 1990 and will retire on January 3, 2023 after more than 32 years of dedicated service to our community; and,

WHEREAS, he was initially hired as the Fire Protection Engineer and was then promoted to Fire Marshal on March 13, 1994; and,

WHEREAS, he was appointed as the City of Madison’s Emergency Management Coordinator in 2005; and,

WHEREAS, for the past 17 years, he oversaw the City’s response to multiple large-scale emergencies, including the flooding of 2018 and the Covid-19 pandemic; and,

WHEREAS, in 2008, he spearheaded a movement to update the City’s smoke alarm ordinance, which passed and went into effect in 2010; and,

WHEREAS, in 2009, he created an Elevator Inspection Division, with responsibility for inspecting all of the conveyances in the City; and,

WHEREAS, in 2016, he was instrumental in securing a “Class 1” ISO classification for the City of Madison-a distinction held by only three municipalities in the state of Wisconsin; and,

WHEREAS, in 2011, he received the Madison and Dane County Public Health Award for Leadership; and,

WHEREAS, in 2022 he received the Joe Vorce Career Safety Award from the Professional fire Fighters of Wisconsin; and,

WHEREAS, under his leadership, the City of Madison saw an expansion of its fire prevention and community education services, with a more progressive and comprehensive approach to life safety;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council express their appreciation for the services, dedication, and passion for the safety of this community that Fire Marshal Ed Ruckriegel gave to City of Madison during his 32 years of service.
