WHEREAS, Alder Syed Abbas was elected to the Madison Common Council on April 16, 2019; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas served on the Ad Hoc Task Force on the Structure of City Government (TFOGS) Final Report Implementation Work Group, Board of Parks Commissioners, Common Council Executive Committee, Jeffrey Clay Erlanger Civility in Public Discourse Award Committee, Finance Committee, President’s Work Group to Review and Revise the Chief of Staff Position Description, Public Market Development Committee, Sustainable Madison Committee, Task Force on Structure of City Government, Urban Design Commission, and Warner Park Community Recreation Center Advisory Subcommittee; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas became the first South Asian ever to hold a Common Council position; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas was the first South Asian to serve as Vice President of the Common Council from 2020-2021, and as President of the Common Council from 2021-2022; and

WHEREAS, in 2022, Alder Abbas as Council President created the President's Workgroup on Environmental Justice and the President's Workgroup on Racial Justice, Antiracism and Equity; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas played a leading role in the creation of the Oscar Mayer Special Area Plan and added Madison’s first ever Environmental Justice language in the planning process document; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas strongly advocated for protection of wetlands on the Hartmeyer area and was successfully able to save 15 acres of land; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas was instrumental in decreasing the City of Madison’s carbon footprint by introducing an Electric Vehicle Charging Station ordinance and Plastic Straw Upon Request ordinance; and

WHEREAS, Alder Abbas ensured community input into the intensive development of the Northside and near Eastside; and
