Celebrating August 14, 2022, as Pakistan Independence Day
Body
WHEREAS, Pakistan Independence Day is observed annually in Pakistan and throughout the world to commemorate the day when Pakistan achieved independence from the United Kingdom on August 14, 1947, with Muhammad Ali Jinnah being sworn in as the country’s first Governor General; and,
WHEREAS, across Madison, Wisconsin, Pakistan and the world, many parades and celebrations will take place and many people will hoist the distinctive green and white Pakistani flag of the Crescent and Star above their homes and at the Pakistan Parliament and President buildings; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to commemorating Pakistan’s independence, this day celebrates the hopes and dreams of the many people whose families immigrated to Madison from Pakistan, and who now call the Badger state and Madison their home, and are vital to its success; and,
WHEREAS, today, the City of Madison joins Pakistanis in Madison, in Wisconsin, and across the world in celebrating Pakistan Independence Day and in promoting diversity, inclusion, education, and the appreciation of Pakistani culture and the Pakistani community throughout our community;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City of Madison recognizes and celebrates August 14, 2022, as Pakistan Independence Day
