Authorizing acceptance and appropriation to the 2021 Operating Budget a $15,000 donation from Margie Devereaux and David Hall for the Parents as First Teachers program.
Body
WHEREAS, the Madison Public Library receives support from Madison Public Library Foundation fundraising; and,
WHEREAS, Madison Public Library Foundation received a generous donation from Margie Devereaux and David Hall for the Parents as First Teachers program; and,
WHEREAS, the Madison Public Library (MPL) partners with Public Health Madison Dane County (PHMDC) to incorporate books and literacy materials (in English and Spanish) into PHMDC's Nurse Family Partnership and Prenatal Care Coordination programs; and,
WHEREAS, MPL and PHMDC partnered with the Northside Early Childhood Zone (NECZ) in 2018 to expand the program with additional resources to NECZ which allowed the materials to be shared during home visits; and,
WHEREAS, these partnerships bring valuable and needed resources that promote positive parent-child relationships and early literacy skills to low income, first-time mothers, pregnant women who are considred high risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes, expectant parents and parents of infants and toddlers in their homes or other locations where they feel most comfortable; and,
WHEREAS, this donation will allow MPL to expand the current partnerships to additional family-serving and home-visiting organizations through a collaboration with Madison Reading Project in order to serve more children and families. Madison Reading Project (MRP) is a local non-profit organization that works to get free high-quality books to kids to build home libraries and help ignite a love of reading. We at MPL also recognize a shared interest with MRP in providing diverse, culturally relevant books that also celebrate BIPOC authors/illustrators.
