WHEREAS, George C. Hank III was hired by the City of Madison as a Housing Inspector 1 on November 17, 1986; promoted to Housing Supervisor on December 14, 1998; then promoted to Building Inspection Division Director on April 19, 2005, serving as the Director for 16 years; and

WHEREAS, For over 34 years, George has dedicated himself to the City of Madison, making for a great municipality for both current and future members of the public to enjoy, which was recognized during his tenure as the Building Inspection Division Director, as Madison gained national recognition as one of the most livable cities in the country; and

WHEREAS, George presided over building construction in the city, which gained over 40,000 residents since 2005, all in need of safe and clean buildings and places to live, work and play; and

WHEREAS, George played an instrumental role in systematically assisting with correcting building and property maintenance, including ongoing issues associated with the most challenging properties in the city. These properties often included owners who faced financial and other personal challenges, and who are often the most vulnerable and under-represented populations in the community; and

WHEREAS, George sustained a customer service approach to his job, always keeping the members of the public at the focus of this work, and treating all customers, both internal and external, with high respect and empathy; and

WHEREAS, George has provided guidance and leadership to many colleagues, and his institutional knowledge has long been respected by colleagues, City boards and Commissions, Mayors and Common Councils-- and most importantly, the public with whom, and for ...
