I hereby submit, for your consideration and approval, the following resident committee appointments.

 

*2/3 vote required for confirmation of non-city residents.

Pursuant to Sec. 3.30(2) of the Madison General Ordinances, "...provision shall not apply to a member of or candidate for appointment to a City of Madison board, committee or commission where, in the judgement of the mayor and two-thirds (2/3) of the Common Council, the best interests of the city will be served by the appointment of a non-resident member who is particularly well qualified by reasons of education, background, and experience with Madison business concerns or other Madison-based employers and the Mayor specifies fully to the Common Council the reasons why he or she is recommending such appointment."

 

 

EARLY CHILDHOOD CARE AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE

 

SYLVIA F. RAMIREZ (13th A.D.) - appoint to the remainder of a three-year term to the position of Resident Member. Ms. Ramirez is the vice president, administration at Madison College. Her purview includes oversight of the Early Learning Campus. Ms. Ramirez succeeds Lana Nenide.

LANDLORD AND TENANT ISSUES COMMITTEE

 

KENYA S. PARKER (1st A.D.) - appoint to a one-year term to the position of Alternate Member. Ms. Parker is a research assistant with the Wisconsin State Assembly. She is active with various organizations including Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin and the Urban League of Greater Madison. Ms. Parker succeeds Allison A. Markoski.

MADISON GUARANTEED INCOME PILOT PROGRAM ADVISORY TASK FORCE

 

MARTHA CRANLEY (10th A.D.) - appoint to the position of Non-Profit Representative. Ms. Cranley is the vice president of community impact for United Way of Dane County.

 

                     Currently serving on:                     Housing Strategy Committee

 

 

SABRINA MADISON (1st A.D.) - appoint to the position of Non-Profit Representative. Ms. Madison is the founder and director of Progress Center for Black Women.

 

                     Currently serving on: Economic Development Committee

 

 

*WALTER WILLIAMS, Verona - appoint to the position of Non-Profit Representative.

 

Rationale: Mr. Williams is a professional school counselor with the Verona Area High School. He currently serves as the president of the Charles Hamilton Houston Institute, whose mission is to “prepare Black and other youth for economic independence by focusing on: self-esteem, health, goal-setting, academic achievement, study skills, diploma and degree completion, work skills, business opportunities, service to others and citizenship.”

 

 

*KAREN MENENDEZ COLLER, Middleton - appoint to the position of Non-Profit Representative.

 

Rationale: Ms. Menendez Coller is the executive director of Centro Hispano, the largest social services provider for the Madison & Dane County low income Latinx community.

 

ERICA L. NELSON (6th A.D.) appoint to the position of Social Welfare Policy Expert. Ms. Nelson is the advocacy director for Kids Forward - a child and family policy advocacy organization.

 

LAURA J. DRESSER (6th A.D.) - appoint to the position of Social Welfare Policy Expert. Ms. Dresser is the associate director at the Center on Wisconsin Strategy (COWS) - a research center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

 

STEPHEN J. YOUNG (6th A.D.) - appoint to the position of Social Welfare Policy Expert. Mr. Young is an associate professor of geography at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has taught courses on Universal Basic Income.

 

ALD. SHIVA BIDAR (5th A.D.) - appoint to the position of Mayoral Designee. Alder Bidar is the vice president/chief diversity officer for UW Health. She has served as the district five alder for the past 12 years.

 

 

SUSTAINABLE MADISON COMMITTEE

 

JAMES R. ALVIN (4th A.D.) - appoint to the remainder of a two-year term to the position of Second Alternate. Mr. James is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, majoring in Economics and Chemical Engineering. He is active in the community, volunteering with both the Salvation Army and Centro Hispano. Mr. James succeeds Heather Driscoll who assumed a regular membership position.
