The proposed resolution will amend the 2018 Adopted Operating Budget to transfer $50,000 from Contingent Reserve to purchased services in the Mayor’s Office for a contract with the Urban League of Greater Madison. Following the transfer of these funds the remaining balance in 2018 Contingent Reserve will be $1,600,085.

WHEREAS in 2014 President Barack Obama launched the My Brother’s Keeper Alliance (MBK) initiative, a federal effort to “address persistent opportunity gaps and to tear down barriers that too often prevent boys and young men of color and other young people from realizing their potential”; and,

WHEREAS the City of Madison responded to the MBK Community Challenge by reviewing local public policy, hosting an action summit, and developing a locally tailored action plan to address opportunity gaps for boys and young men of color. The City and its partners, including the Urban League of Greater Madison (UGLM), Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD), United Way of Dane County, and others, are now members of the MBK Alliance network of nearly 250 communities; and,

WHEREAS the MBK Alliance, now an initiative of the Obama Foundation, has challenged MBK Network communities to apply for funding to replicate or scale evidence-based programs that reduce youth violence or engage mentors to help young people achieve success.
