Title

Supporting MGE Shareholder Resolution for Electrification of Transportation Sector.

Body

WHEREAS, the City of Madison has set a goal of 100% renewable energy as a means of addressing the institutional and moral imperatives of climate change; and,

 

WHEREAS, transportation is one of the major consumers of energy and sources of global warming pollution, and,

 

WHEREAS,, a multi-step process of transitioning utilities to renewable sources of energy and  transitioning the transportation sector to electric vehicles and other types of electrified transportation would result in 50-70% reductions in carbon emissions and ground level ozone; and,

 

WHEREAS, Madison has an opportunity to become a hub for electric transport research and development by participating in an electric roadmap assessment led by coordinated by MGE, and,

 

WHEREAS, the City of Madison owns shares of Madison Gas and Electric Company and will cast votes in the proxy; and,

 

WHEREAS, MGE shareholders have introduced a shareholder resolution calling on MGE to augment local planning for electrified transportation, including both personal vehicles and mass transit,

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison supports the shareholder resolution and calls upon MGE management to embrace this initiative; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that City will cast its proxy votes for the "electrification" shareholder resolution.
