Discussion will continue throughout the year to update the 2011 Solid Waste Plan.
April 7 2016:
Discussion of new goals for 2017 plan. Goals include to include, but not limited to, to plan for future landfill expansion/extend life of landfill, identify opportunities for recycling with a robust educational component. For next meeting, a framework to hold goals should be created.
Discussion also made to rename the plan from "Road to Zero Waste" to a title that reflects a commitment to environmental responsiblity, while remaining grounded in that some materials will likely remain persistent barriers to literal "zero waste" and that true environmental responsibility comes from altering human behavior.
June 2 2016:
Improvements and edits recommended to draft of introduction to Solid Waste Plan made to make the plan more concrete with stronger, yet more familiar, language and terms.
Discussion also made regarding the creation of steps to achieve stated goals. Also discussed was a chart to examine the flow of waste through the waste stream.
July 7 2016:
Previous direction scrapped in favor of a systems thinking/values approach to deciding ways to help shape the solid waste plan.
September 1 2016:
Values defined as safety, environment, convenience, aesthetics, public health, practicality, and community values. Next steps defined as finding concrete goals that would address these values.
November 3 2016:
Ideas shared with committee members to reach goals. Also, rather than thinking of this as a zero waste plan, the plan will instead be definted as a "maximum recycling" effort.
December 1 2016:
Need for having concrete details and a timeline to achieve goals was discussed and will be a part of the final plan.
July 2017:
First draft completed. Shifted from "zero waste" goal to "zero recyclable waste to the landfill."
August 2017 - December 2017
