That the City of Madison Mayor, Common Council and Iranian community honor the bravery and sacrifice of the 16 Iranian firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty on January 19, 2017, and recognize and thank the Madison Fire Department for bravely and selflessly protecting our residents and neighborhoods every day.
Body
WHEREAS, on January 19, 2017, at around 7:50 a.m., a fire began on the ninth floor of the Plasco Trade Center, an historic high-rise in the heart of Tehran, Iran’s capital city; and
WHEREAS, the Plasco Trade Center, a symbol of modernity in Iran since it was completed in 1962, was home to a shopping center and hundreds of production workshops; and
WHEREAS, 200 firefighters responded to the call to find the upper stories of the building engulfed in flames in the worst fire in Tehran since 2005; and
WHEREAS, after battling the blaze for over three hours, while also working to assure that the occupants had been evacuated, the north wall of the building collapsed without warning, leading to the collapse of the entire building in a matter of seconds, trapping many firefighters inside; and
WHEREAS, the firefighters who responded to the fire at the Plasco Trade Center did so without reservation and with their personal safety on the line;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison Mayor and Common Council honor the bravery and sacrifice of the 16 Iranian firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty on January 19, 2017.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City of Madison Mayor and Common Council join our Iranian community in extending our deepest sympathy to the families of the 16 heroes who died while trying to save the occupants of the Plasco building.
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that City of Madison Mayor, Common Council and Madison's Iranian community also recognize and thank the Madison Fire Department for bravely and selflessly protecting our residents and neighborhoods every day.
