The estimated cost of the flags is $3,600.  Funds are available in the Engineering 2016 Operating Budget for the purchase of the flags.

Establishing the practice of flying the City flag on City-controlled permanent flagpoles.

Body

WHEREAS, the city of Madison adopted an official city flag on April 12, 1962, by Resolution Number 4408; and

 

WHEREAS, Madison’s flag is inspired by the topography of our city and is nationally recognized as one of the most well-designed flags in North America; and

 

WHEREAS, symbols, such as flags, build national and local pride and loyalty and are important for universities, sports teams, businesses, products, and organizations, including cities; and

 

WHEREAS, the City flag has been flown in very few locations since its adoption over 50 years ago; and

 

WHEREAS, it is in the City’s interest to promote universal civic pride through such great symbolism; and

 

WHEREAS, the City of Madison currently has permanent flagpoles on City property upon which the flag of the United States of America is flown;

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Madison will fly the City’s official flag on all permanent flagpoles on city property.

 

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Facilities Manager will ensure that the City’s flag is flown in accordance with flag flying etiquette and the United States Flag Code.
