Professor Medina is a poet, translator and scholar. He specializes in Mexican and Chicano/a literature and culture, intellectual history, film studies, and Mexican migration to the United States. In the area of research he has published Autor, autoridad y autorización: Escritura y poética de Octavio Paz (Colegio de México, 1999), Genealogías del presente y del pasado. Literatura y cine meXicanos (Latinoamericana editors, Lima-Berkeley, 2010), as well as articles in journals and books on masculinity, violence, modern and postmodern hibridity, global melodrama, otherness and neo-avant-gard poetic movements. In poetry he has published, Báilame este viento, Mariana (1980), "Amor de Lejos . . . Fools' Love" (Arte Publico Press, 1986), and Nomadic Nation / Nación nómada (both in La Ratona Cartonera, Cuernavaca, México, and Rosalita Cartonera, Madison, Wisconsin). He received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in poetry (1981), and other poetry awards. His poems have been included in a dozen of Mexican, Latin American and US Latino anthologies. In collaboration with John Burns, he published a major anthology of Beat poetry translated into Spanish, entitled, Una tribu de salvajes improvisando a las puertas del infierno (Aldus: Mexico City, 2012). His anthology of Infrarrealist poetry, Perros habitados por las voces del desierto is forthcoming in Mexico in fall 2013. He is currently writing a book on the Infrarrealist Movement, of which he was a founding member in Mexico City in the mid 1970s. Since 1997 he has been involved with various UW-Madison study abroad programs in Latin America and Spain. He is also the faculty director for the International Learning Community and the Global Cultures Certificate Program.
