Green Ribbon Project

Several neighborhoods have started a Green Ribbon Project. They have marked the ash trees in their neighborhood park with a green ribbon to raise awareness about impending changes that Emerald Ash Borer will bring to our neighborhood parks and urban forest. The City of Madison has been working on its tactical response to EAB since 2008. The balanced plan of treatment, removals and replanting was approved by Common Council in 2012. In November of 2013, EAB was discovered in Madison.
Adopt a Park Tree Program
Currently there is no money in the city budget to treat park ash trees and we recognize that citizens may want to help in these efforts. The Adopt-a-Park Tree program's goal is to provide a way for residents to help preserve the ash tree population in Madison's parks. The program allows residents to select specific ash trees that they are interested in saving by working with City officials and contractors that are licensed by the City of Madison to chemically treat ash trees.
Neighborhoods are using the Green Ribbon Project to bring awareness of the impact that EAB will have on their neighborhood park tree canopy. The goal of the project is to also raise money to treat the ash trees through the Adopt a Park Tree Program.
How to start your neighborhood's Green Ribbon Project:
1. Neighborhood expresses interest in raising money for the Adopt A Park Tree program.
2. Contact the appropriate park Supervisor to discuss participation in the Green Ribbon Project.
3. The Park supervisor gives group the basic Green Ribbon flier for posting and the ribbon.
The Neighborhood MAY customize the flier, however, they must receive prior authorization on content before posting.
4. The Park supervisor can ask the neighborhood to stop the project if the ribbons become a park littering issue or if incorrect information is posted.
5. Money raised for the Adopt a Park Tree program will either go through the neighborhood association or if the N.A. chooses, they can set up an account with the Madison Parks Foundation. To set up an account with MPF, please call 266-4339.
6. With money raised, the Neighborhood Association will fill out the Adopt a Park Tree application.
