Proclaiming October 17, 2013 as "Lights On Afterschool Day".

Body
WHEREAS, citizens of Madison stand together committed to quality afterschool programs and opportunities because they:

*Provide safe, challenging, and enriching learning experiences that help children develop social, emotional, and healthy life style skills.

*Support parents who are working, training for a job, or in school by ensuring their children are safe and nurtured after the regular school day ends.

*Build stronger communities by involving children, parents, and volunteers in the lives of our young people, thereby promoting positive relationships among children, families, and adults.

*Support and enhance the academic achievement and overall school success of children by creatively engaging all family members; and,

WHEREAS, “Lights On Afterschool”, is a national day of recognition of afterschool programs held this year on October 17, 2013, promotes the importance which quality experiences play in the well-being of our children and the quality of life in our community; and,

WHEREAS, More than 5,000 elementary school age children in Dane County attend afterschool programs provided by school districts, community centers, non-profit agencies, for-profit child care centers, and family child care in homes; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Madison is committed to investing in the health and safety of all children by providing expanded learning opportunities grounded in the principle that quality afterschool programs are key to helping our children become successful adults,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that Mayor and Common Council of the City of Madison, do hereby proclaim October 17, 2013 as LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL DAY and commends afterschool programs for the many positive contributions they make to improve the quality of life in the City of Madison and their efforts to assure the future success of our children and the broader community; and,
