Body
WHEREAS the Rotary Club of Madison was chartered with 33 members in June, 1913, the 71st affiliate of the service organization founded in Chicago in 1905; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary Club of Madison, now also known as Madison Downtown Rotary, is the eighth largest of the approximately 34,000 member clubs in Rotary International, with more than 500 members; and

WHEREAS, the Rotary motto, “Service Above Self” inspire us all to a meaningful life; and

WHEREAS, individually and collectively, Rotarians have been integral to the planning, financing and construction of some of the most important public developments in Madison; and

WHEREAS, the vital role played by members of Downtown Rotary in the civic, professional, business and cultural life of Madison is exemplified by the numerous parks, streets, buildings, awards, even a neighborhood, named in their honor; and

WHEREAS, since 1974 the Madison Rotary Foundation has provided mentors and more than $3.5 million in college scholarships to 563 area high school seniors; and

WHEREAS, since 1986, the Madison Rotary Foundation has distributed more than $5.8 million in grants for community, international, youth and senior fitness programs; and

WHEREAS, Downtown Rotary’s weekly luncheon, Madison’s largest ongoing assembly, has for decades been the city’s primary forum for interesting and influential speakers to discuss the important topics of their time; and

WHEREAS, each year since 2000, Downtown Rotary has organized a day-long Ethics Symposium, helping about 2500 juniors from Madison and Dane County high schools recognize, analyze and resolve real-life ethical challenges; and

WHEREAS, Downtown Rotary celebrated its first hundred years in 2013 with a series of public events on the Cap...
