Honoring Elvehjem Elementary School on the celebration of its 50th birthday during the 2012-2013 school year.
 
Body
WHEREAS, the school was officially dedicated on December 11, 1962; and,
 
WHEREAS, the school was named after Conrad Arnold Elvehjem, the biochemist who discovered the importance of vitamin B3 or niacin and who, just months before the school opened, died in office as the 13th president of the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and.
 
WHEREAS, the school taught kindergarten through sixth grades and had 366 students its first year; and,
 
WHEREAS, enrollment reached an all-time high of 683 in 1966; and,
 
WHEREAS, when opened, the school had only 14 rooms, but has since undergone four additions to the building and exterior; and,
 
WHEREAS, the first Boundless handicapped-accessible playground in the state of Wisconsin was added there in 2008; and,
 
WHEREAS, the school continues to partner with the YMCA, MSCR and other student-based groups and remains a City of Madison polling place for the community at large; and,
 
WHEREAS, the school was rededicated on December 11, 2012 by Interim Superintendent of Schools and former Elvehjem Principal Jane Belmore; and,
 
WHEREAS, on Saturday, May 4,2013  the school's 50th birthday was celebrated on-site at Elvehjem Elementary School with current Principal Craig Campbell as well as many former principals, staff, parents, and students present; and,
 
WHEREAS, it is estimated that 6,843 students have been educated at Elvehjem Elementary School since it opened its doors 50 years ago,
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Madison Common Council do hereby congratulate Elvehjem Elementary School, its teachers, staff, students, and families, and wish them good fortune in all future endeavors.
