Honoring and congratulating the Daytime Warming Shelter program for its successful 2012-2013 operations.
Body
WHEREAS the an interim Daytime Warming Shelter began on November 26, 2012; and,

WHEREAS the Warming Shelter, a program of Porchlight Inc, and located at 827 E. Washington Avenue in Madison, was initiated by Dane County to address a concern about homeless individuals in our community; and,

WHEREAS, the Warming Shelter staff, lead by Sarah Gillmore, Z! Haukeness and Nate Abrams have created a welcoming and engaging atmosphere and have truly partnered with clients to find solutions that meet and fit their needs using a relationship-based, harm reduction community justice model; and,

WHEREAS, the Warming Shelter has provided services to approximately 125 or more people per day; and,

WHEREAS, the Warming Shelter has provided access to or resources on nutritional meals, computers, transportation, medical care, clothing, housing, substance recovery, employment and employment training and mental health support; and,

WHEREAS, the Warming Shelter has provided additional activities support groups and activities such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Art Group, Cooking Classes, Men’s Support Group, Reading Group, non-denominational Spiritual Group, Woman’s Support Group, and Writing Group; and,

WHEREAS, there has been tremendous support from the community with donations of materials, food, clothing, medical and hygiene supplies, and transportation; and,

WHEREAS, there have been limited police contact and diligent work to reduce conflict between clients, neighbors and the community; and,

WHEREAS the Shelter will end on March 31, 2013; and,

WHEREAS the Dane County Homeless Issues Committee has recommended the establishment of a permanent Day Resource Center beginning November 1, 2013,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council honor and congratulate the Daytime Warming Shelter for its success...
