This resolution would encourage City of Madison residents to fill out a free survey demonstrating how some modest lifestyle changes could result in savings of water, energy, and landfill resources, while reducing the level of some environmental pollutants. No appropriation is required.

Declaring and determining that that the City of Madison agrees and supports the “Wyland Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation, and that the program is to be implemented from March 31 to April 30, 2012 through a series of communications and outreach strategies to encourage residents to take the conservation challenge.
Body
WHEREAS, the City of Madison, Wisconsin continues to explore paths to sustainability which will reduce water and energy consumption and to inspire its residents to care for natural resources; and,

WHEREAS, cities can engage and inspire their residents and those of neighboring communities to become better environmental stewards, and,

WHEREAS, the Wayland Mayor’s Challenge, in association with the Wyland Foundation, the U.S. forest Services, NOAA, and Toyota, is a healthy, non-profit competition for cleaner communities as well as a water use and pollution reduction competition between cities, and,

WHEREAS, with the encouragement of their Mayors, residents may register their participation in their city’s Challenge by making simple pledges to decrease their water use and to reduce pollution for the period of one year, thereby assisting their cities to apply water conservation strategies to reach their city’s water reduction goals, and,

WHEREAS, from March 31 to April 30, 2012, the City of Madison wishes to inspire its residents and its neighboring communities to take the “Wyland Mayor’s Challenge for Water Conservation” by making a series of online pledges at www.mywaterpledge.com to reduce their impact on the environment and to see immediate savings in their water, trash, and electrical costs,
