WHEREAS, Sustain Dane recognizes individuals each year for their innovative, creative work in community development and resilience -- the heart of sustainability, and;
 
WHEREAS, Public Health Nurses Kim Neuschel and Jessica Leclair were recently named 2011 Badger Bioneers, and;
 
WHEREAS, Kim and Jessica early on recognized that where you live determines how you live, and;
 
WHEREAS, they are part of Public Health's Equity Team which promotes strengthening social, political and economic structures within and between communities to eliminate health inequities; and
 
WHEREAS, Kim and Jessica's work focuses on social justice, civic engagement, and sustainability with the overall goal of building social capital resulting in place-based characteristics like beautiful neighborhoods, neighborly relations, cross-generational interaction, employment opportunities - to alleviate the stressors that are leading causes of death and disease in urban communities today: obesity, chronic illness and violence, and;
 
WHEREAS, Kim and Jessica have worked tirelessly with residents in southwest Madison to improve their health by looking at the community's well-being based on the social conditions where these residents live and work, and;
 
WHEREAS, their work through community meetings have culminated in edible community gardens on Russett Road, the impetus for the creation of Southwest Community Farmers Market and the recently formed Southwest Community Organizing Committee,
 
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Common Council congratulate and recognize Public Health Nurses Kim Neuschel and Jessica Leclair on being named 2011 Badger Bioneers and their dedication to the residents in southwest Madison.
