It is unknown what vehicles and equipment will be made available to the City. Any associated City costs will need to be included in the Police Department's Operating Budget.
Title
Authorizing the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept vehicles and other equipment from the Wisconsin 1033 Program.
Body
WHEREAS, section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1997 authorizes the Department of Defense to transfer excess military property to state and local law enforcement agencies; and,
WHEREAS, the Wisconsin 1033 Program of the Wisconsin Office of Justice Assistance administers the distribution of surplus vehicles and equipment to eligible Wisconsin law enforcement agencies; and,
WHEREAS, the Madison Police Department is enrolled as an eligible agency in the Wisconsin 1033 Program; and,
WHEREAS, Wisconsin law enforcement agencies acquired more than $5 million dollars (original acquisition value) in surplus vehicles and equipment through the Wisconsin 1033 Program in the last fiscal year; and,
WHEREAS, surplus vehicles and equipment are provided to recipient agencies at little or no cost; and,
WHEREAS, acquisition of surplus vehicles and equipment through the Wisconsin 1033 Program will enhance the ability of the Madison Police Department to serve the citizens of Madison.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Chief of Police are authorized to accept vehicles and other equipment from the Wisconsin 1033 Program.
