Fiscal Note
The Resolution awards a Signature Art Grant of $5,000.  Funding is authorized in the 2011 Adopted Planning Division operating budget.  No additional appropriation is required.

Seeking Common Council approval of the 2011 Signature Art Grant award as recommended by the Madison Arts Commission.
Body
WHEREAS, The Madison Arts Commission has the authority, by ordinance, to annually recommend arts grants for approval by the Common Council; and
 
WHEREAS, by the annual October 15 Signature Grant application deadline the Madison Arts Commission received 6 applications for the single $5,000 Signature Grant award; and
 
WHEREAS, the Madison Arts Commission met on October 25, 2011 to evaluate the Signature Grant applications received for the 2011-2012 grant period and their recommendation to award James A. Carrier the $5,000 Signature Grant for "The Librarian and the Banjo" which is a documentary film he is creating about a Wisconsin-born music librarian who proved that the banjo came to America from African slaves. The film, 30-60 minutes in length, will be ideal for Madisonians interested in American music, African-American studies, and library studies.
 
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Madison Common Council approves the aforementioned proposed use of the remaining 2011-2012 grant award funding and authorizes the Planning Division Director, the City Finance Director and the City Attorney to execute the agreements on behalf of the City of Madison to effectuate said grant.
