Body
WHEREAS, the City of Madison believes that diversity and tolerance are fundamental aspects of our character, and that immigrant and minority groups provide an essential vitality to our community; and

WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 173 would encourage and give legal cover to racial profiling, and unfairly target Latinos; and

WHEREAS, it is the constitutional duty of the federal government to set and enforce the country's immigration laws; and

WHEREAS, utilizing local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws alienates minority groups, and undermines their trust in law enforcement; and

WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 173 would have the effect of reducing cooperation with the police, discourage reporting crime, thus making our community less safe; and

WHEREAS, Assembly Bill 173 is modeled after the controversial Arizona law that has prompted boycotts which have cost the state hundreds of thousands of dollars;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Common Council of the City of Madison opposes Assembly Bill 173; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we ask the Wisconsin Legislature to oppose Assembly Bill 173; and
