Authorizing the Mayor, City Clerk and Chief of Police to accept a law enforcement and public health grant award from the California Endowment in the amount of $10,000 and to utilize these funds toward increasing community safety in Madison.

Body
WHEREAS, Chief Noble Wray participated in a California Endowment Executive Session on Increasing Community Safety in March 2011 to discuss how the fields of public safety and public health can benefit from each other; and

WHEREAS, the concept of bridging public health and public safety promises to improve community engagement and vitality and public safety; and

WHEREAS, the Department has been awarded $10,000 for its "Increasing Community Safety in Madison: The Intersection between Law Enforcement and Public Health Approaches" project; and,

WHEREAS, this project is a public health and law enforcement collaboration to addresses public safety problem that affects the physical or mental health of neighborhood residents; and

WHEREAS, this project is a low-cost, replicable, and sustainable social innovation, modeled on the Public Health - Madison and Dane County "Creating a Sense of place in Southwest Madison project, an evidence-based public health approach to community revitalization; and

WHEREAS, during the summer of 2011, the Madison Police Departments West District, Public Health Madison and Dane County, the Meadowood Neighborhood Center and Youth Services of Dane County all propose bringing drop-in park programming five days per week for elementary aged children to the Meadowood Park and broadening the Southwest Madison Youth Work Crew (the Clean and Freshies) and expanding and improving Front Yard Gardens project; and

WHEREAS, the Southwest Madison Youth Work Crew promotes respect for public and private property, helps at-risk youth obtain an employment history, addresses the issue...
