Title
Recognizing Black Hawk Middle School's Growing Together School and Community Garden.
Body
WHEREAS, cooperation between the Madison Metropolitan School District and several corporate and advocacy organizations has produced a beautiful and educational garden on the grounds of Black Hawk Middle School/Gompers Elementary School; and
 
WHEREAS, the Growing Together School and Community Garden will provide important learning experiences for students as well as community building among local gardeners; and
 
WHEREAS, this effort was led by community activist Rebecca Kemble, Fiskars Brands Inc., the staff and students of Black Hawk Middle School, the Community Action Coalition for South Central Wisconsin; The Home Depot Foundation, and the Madison Area Permaculture Guild; and
 
WHEREAS, Madison-based Fiskars made the project possible through its tool and material contributions, planning and coordination, organizational skills and team members as part of its community garden initiative Project Orange Thumb; and the Community Action Coalition worked with Kemble and Principal Sean Storch to develop the project idea and coordinate details for the project; and
 
WHEREAS, Home Depot provided free plants as well as volunteer workers; and Kate Heiber-Cobb and others at the Permaculture Guild designed and installed elements of the garden such as the herb spiral and plant guilds around fruit trees; and the Madison Metropolitan School District allowed the community garden on school property; and
 
WHEREAS, the incredible one-day garden build effort on May 26, 2011, included dozens of volunteers from the Madison community as well as corporate participants; and
 
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council recognize the work and generosity of all those involved and thank them for their addition to the city's quality of life.
