Fiscal Note
This grant will be accounted for in a segregated fund.  Matching funds of about $5400 are included in the Police Department's operating budget and will pay the fringe benefit costs (FICA and Wis. Retirement Fund) associated with the overtime funded by the grant.  Matching funds are not required.

Authorizing the Mayor and Chief of Police to accept a highway safety grant for $25,000 from WI Department of Transportation for traffic safety alcohol campaigns in 2005.
Body
WHEREAS, each year the Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation-BOTS (WI DOT-BOTS), provides funds to local police agencies for overtime for enforcement of traffic violations and traffic enforcement related equipment; and,
 
WHEREAS, this year WI DOT-BOTS has offered a total of $25,000 specifically for contributing to decreasing the number of alcohol related and aggressive driving crashes, and reducing deaths and injuries resulting from crashes, by deploying officers for alcohol traffic enforcement; and,
 
WHEREAS, the WI DOT-BOTS has provided this funding to the City of Madison for the past several years; and,
 
WHEREAS, the funds enable the Police Department's Traffic and Support Section to coordinate additional alcohol traffic enforcement activities that would otherwise not be provided; and,
 
WHEREAS, the funds also enable the Police Department to purchase the additional portable breath test intoxilizers and radar equipment needed during alcohol related traffic enforcement.
 
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Chief of Police are authorized to accept the trafic safety grant totaling $25,000 from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety for Alcohol Mobilization and Sustained Enforcement Patrols 2005.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that these funds be used for additional overtime related to alcohol traffic enforcement activities and for the purchase of portable breath test intoxilizers and radar equipment.
 
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Comptroller and the Police Department are authorized to establish and/or maintain accounts as required for the administration of the grant funds.
