Title

Proposed storm sewer installation through Lake Edge Park

Body

The 2022 Capital Budget includes the reconstruction of Davies St, Dempsey Rd and Maher Ave near Lake Edge Park. The rural cross-sections on these streets would be replaced with a well-drained, pedestrian-friendly urban cross-section, including, sidewalk, curb and gutter and storm sewer properly sized to protect residents and private property during large rain events. Other utilities will also be improved or replaced as necessary in the project limits. Engineering is proposing to construct storm sewer through Lake Edge Park to drain the newly designed Maher-Dempsey-Davies intersection, as well as the low point on Dempsey Rd at its intersection with Gary St. This storm sewer would be sized to capture significant stormwater runoff and reduce overflow into Lake Edge Park from Dempsey Rd during large rain events. To minimize disruption to the park, Engineering is proposing the use of plastic Type II storm pipe and pre-fabricated custom elbows; the use of this material will allow flexibility in the pipe corridor, and allow the avoidance of large trees and park facilities. Engineering is also proposing to minimize park disruption during the project by avoiding the full replacement of the existing sanitary sewer through Lake Edge Park, and is instead identifying less invasive methods of rehabilitating the sanitary sewer in-place.
