Title

Honoring the 10th anniversary of Friends of Cherokee Marsh.

Body

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh advocated to protect the marsh in the city's Cherokee Special Area Plan, including support for purchase of over 300 acres now permanently protected by city ownership, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh established the Cherokee Marsh Conservation Fund to provide a permanent source of funding for conservation at Cherokee Marsh, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh worked to provide funding for carp removal and preventing shoreline erosion on the Yahara River at Cherokee Marsh, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh provides transportation funding so every local teacher who wants to bring a class to the marsh for environmental education can do so, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh sponsors bird and nature outings, paddle tours, candlelight walks, and other events with Madison Parks and other partners, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh volunteers with Madison Parks, Dane County, and the DNR to preserve and restore native plant communities in wetlands, prairies, and woods, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh assists Madison Parks in project development and implementation through data collection and monitoring, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh participates in Madison’s Cities Connecting Children to Nature Initiative, and;

 

WHEREAS, the Friends of Cherokee Marsh were recipients of the Madison Parks Volunteer Group of the Year award for 2013 and the Wisconsin DNR Volunteer Steward of the Year in 2014, and;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and the Common Council of the City of Madison congratulates the Friends of Cherokee Marsh on the occasion of their 10th anniversary, and commends them for their volunteerism and active devotion to protecting the Cherokee Marsh, the largest wetland in Dane County at the top of the Yahara River watershed.
