Title

Amending the 2016 Operating Budget to appropriate add $6,400 from Contingent Reserve to Direct Appropriations the Mayor’s Office for the purposes of installing a water line at the Rennebohm Park Community Garden.

Body

WHEREAS, over 100 gardeners were displaced with the State redevelopment of the Hill Farms property that housed the Sheboygan Community Gardens; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Madison worked with the displaced gardeners and Community GroundWorks in attempting to find space in the immediate area to restore garden space; and,

WHEREAS, after community discussions and a public process, a small area within Rennebohm Park was selected to host a new community garden; and,

WHEREAS, the space at Rennebohm Park only replaced 20% of the garden space lost in the redevelopment, thus a staff team is conducting a review of other potential sites in the area; and,

WHEREAS, work began in Rennebohm Park in May 2016 and soon after it became apparent that a larger investment in water infrastructure was needed than originally anticipated; and,

WHEREAS, the work necessary to establish a permanent water line exceeds the capacity of a small community garden in its ability to afford the entire cost of the water line installation, estimated at $11,400; and

WHEREAS, the Rennebohm Community Garden has received a $5,000 grant to assist in covering the costs of the water line installation;

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the 2016 Adopted Operating Budget is amended to transfer $6,400 from Contingent Reserve to Direct Appropriations for the purposes of assisting in the installation of a water line at the Rennebohm Park Community Garden.
